Etsuro Nakamichi founded Nakamichi Research in 1948. The brother of Niro Nakamichi, he was an acoustic engineering officer in the Japanese Navy doing sonar research.

The company he founded initially designed and developed portable radios, tone arms, speakers and communications equipment, and provided R&D for major brands, government entities, universities, and organizations in the private sector.

Since then, Nakamichi has contributed to various innovations in technology, such as the compact disc and similar optical memory systems, paving the way for an entire range of high-end consumer electronics.
